A quiet seated Buddha, withdrawn in deep contemplation. The plinth beneath Him is engraved with lotus petals. As the symbol of compassion, the lotus flower is integral to Buddhist iconography. The legs of the Buddha are gathered upon it in padmasana, a stance that opens up higher-order yogic practices to the citta. The hip-and-knees trifecta is touching the ground beneath Him and the heels of His upward-facing feet converge right below the navel. The Buddha is steeped in the finest recesses of samadhi (yogic contemplation). Over the prolonged course of such a state, He is said to have attained Buddhahood under the Bodhi tree in Gaya.

This is a strictly bitone composition. The charcoal coloured complexion of His body makes for a striking contrast with the colloidal white of His robe. Like it is the case with traditional seated Buddha depictions, it is draped over a single left shoulder.
