Book Description
Preface

Vyutpattivada of Gadadhara Bhattacarya, a work on sabdabodha, kept engaged several generations of scholars in India on exploring and explicating the theories and principles of Linguistic understanding or sentential cognition. The Naiyayikas and the Vaiyakaranas, though differ on many issues regarding the scholastic representation of linguistic theories, accept the authenticity of Vyutpattivada with great value. Vyutpattivada presents the essence of the principles of linguistic understanding being debated upon in an unbroken tradition in India for several millenniums. It is therefore, this work is said to be the most valuable contribution to the language philosophy in general and on Śābdabodha in particular in the Indian intellectual tradition. Gadadhara has very systematically dealt with the theory of linguistic understanding (Sabdabodha) in his Vyutpattivāda, discourse on the logical principles on linguistic understanding [vyutpatti means niyama-viśeşah, i.e. the logico-linguistic principles, and vāda means a discourse].

I had a long cherished desire of studying Vyutpattivāda with my revered teachers Pt. Brahmashri T. S. Shrinivasa Shastrigal and Prof. S. D. Joshi at Pune. I, however, could study only a few passages with Pt. T. S. Shrinivasa Shastriji, whose profound knowledge in almost all branches of Shastric studies, brilliance exposition of the intricacies of the problems, and above all whose affectionate gesture will remain invaluable treasure in my heart throughout my life. Now and then he used to say: "Achyuta!

Vyutpattir ballyasi". This aroused a strong desire in my innocent mind to go for gaining 'vyutpatti' and eventually leading me to take up the project on Vyutpattivada, though I honestly feel that I am far away from gaining the desired sastra-vyutpatti to put my hand on the work like Vyutpattivada.

I started intensive svadhyaya on Vyutpattivada while I was at the University of Oxford during 1997-98 on a Commonwealth Academic Staff Visiting Fellowship. On my return to India, I proposed a Major Research Project to UGC, on "Vyutpattivada: A Critical Study" which I got in 2001. The present volume partly fulfils the work as planned for the project. In this edition of Vyutpattivada I have brought out the text only up to Abhedanvaya-prakarana. The text is based on the critical apparatus (forth-coming) with the help of almost all the available editions along with the commentaries Krsnabhațți by Krsnabhatta and Adarsa by Pt. Sudarsana sastri. The other special feature in this edition is that, the paragraphs are marked with paragraph code numbers starting with VV that stands for Vyutpatti-Vada in the text. The three digit numbering system is introduced here to classify the main topic of discussion, the sub-topics and the internal arguments on the issues concerned. After a thorough examination of the commentaries, I am confident that this classification of the text would provide the most suitable arrangement of the arguments of the texts Vyutpattivada.
