This small treatise is intended to be a brief and rapid survey of the Indo-Aryan history and culture from the earliest times to about 1200 A.D. The book is avowedly meant for the general reader and not for the specialist. Controversial matter has, therefore, been scrupulously avoided and differences of opinion have been only briefly alluded to. The author has purposely abstained from entering into chronological puzzles. Diacritical marks have not been used and therefore the spelling of many words remains unsatisfactory.
The writer is grateful to the numerous authors whose works he has utilized in the preparation of this hand-book.
