Book Description
About the Book
Anthropology in India: Current Epistemology and Future Challenges is the outcome of an academic discourse, Round Table 2009, organized by the Indian National Confederation and Academy of Anthropologists (INCAA), in collaboration with the Indira Gandhi Manav Sanghralaya, Bhopal and the Rastriya Department of Anthropology, University of Hyderabad. There is a near consensus among the contributors to this volume that anthropology as an academic discipline in India is passing through rather a bad patch of its existence. Questions arose, could it be because of its history of being a British colonial transplant? Further questions came up: whether this country was altogether void in anthropological knowledge during the pre-British days of India? If not, has there been any initiative even during post-British days to bridge the hiatus between anthropology as a body of knowledge and anthropology as an academic discipline? Contributors to this treatise volunteered to address these issues, along with several others, under the strict rubric of anthropological professionalism.

Preface
Indian National Confederation and Academy of Anthropologists (INCAA), the apex organization of anthropologists in India organized, in collaboration with the Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Manav Sangrahalaya, Bhopal and the Department of Anthropology, University of Hyderabad; the 4th Inter-Congress in Anthropology at Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh during February 21-23, 2009. The Focal Theme chosen for deliberations at the Inter-Congress was: Anthropology in India: Current Epistemology and Future Challenges. The Governing Council of the Indian National Confederation and Academy of Anthropologists (INCAA) decided that from 2009 onwards, as part of the annual academic event, there will be a Round Table on the Focal Theme. Accordingly, the Round Table was organized on February 22, 2009. A special write-up on the Focal Theme, that was prepared and circulated among the prospective speakers as part of the 4th Inter-Congress in Anthropology literature, is reproduced below: ANTHROPOLOGY IN INDIA: CURRENT EPISTEMOLOGY AND FUTURE CHALLENGES Journey of anthropology in India goes back to the days of British colonial administration in the latter half of the nineteenth century. It is evident that anthropological research in India, which originated and developed under the British influence, has been recognized by academic and non-academic bodies and institutions for many decades.

Introduction
Our colleagues from the Dept. of Anthropology, University of Hyderabad, have earned a distinction by their choice of the Focal Theme, Anthropology in India: Current Epistemology and Future Challenges, for the 4th Inter-Congress in Anthropology. Tracing its roots from the patronage of the British colonial administration, they demonstrate, how after independence of the country, the Indian Anthropology experienced a paradigm shift in the context of emerging specializations. Such progressive developments notwithstanding, the concomitant outcome have not been altogether without blemish. As they spell it out, "The rise of different specializations within the broad sub-disciplines of anthropology and the changes in the research orientation in different sub-disciplines of anthropology resulted in a divorce from the emphasis of earlier anthropologists on greater interaction and working together of the four sub-disciplines. The earlier view of anthropology as an integrating and inter-disciplinary science in the true sense perhaps requires a re-look at our current as well as the past epistemologies and methodologies across sub-disciplines". Therefore, the theme prescribes, "there is a greater need today to evolve coherent conceptual frameworks and methodological approaches and tools to comprehend the changing anthropological engagements". This, no doubt, is too important to let go unattended or only partly attended.
