In this work we present an analysis of the miniscule one-ratti weight ancient Indian coins commonly referred to as masakas (or "mashakas") which circulated in the imperial Magadha-Mauryan states. Our aim is to build on the pioneering work of V.S Agrawala et al., Terry Hardaker and others through an exploration of the style, metrology and metallurgy of a large group of these coins that we were fortunately able to access. There has been no previous metallurgical study of the coins in this series, so for this reason alone we trust that our work will be of use to interested economic historians, numismatists and collectors. We have also been able to update, expand and clarify Hardaker's excellent catalogue from 1999, so we can present a corrected and somewhat more comprehensive typological listing: which is accompanied by an unprecedented level of detailed metrological data. Hopefully this will also be useful to the audiences mentioned.
