This book "Bangla Basic Vocabulary", containing the basic words of Bangla, is intended for the teachers and students of Bangla in its learning and teaching as a second language. This is an English-Bengali word book where Bengali words for very basic words of English language are given. The Bengali words are given in Bengali script. Those who know the script may read the words directly. For those readers, who don't know the script, the actual pronunciations of the Bengali words are given in roman script with diacritical marks and some extra symbols. This system would help the readers to pronounce the words the way Bengali speakers do.
It is hoped that the book would help those for whom it is intended.
Language, in addition to its function as a medium of communication, is an integral part of all cultural, literary and scientific activities. In short, language plays a prominent role in almost all human endeavors. In the post independent Indian scenario different linguistic groups, instead of being secluded, need to intermingle so as to have different types of interactions. Though the Indians as a whole have a large chunk of shared common culture, there do exist some variations, mostly without affecting the core, based on linguistic, ethnic and regional variations. These differences may be over-projected to create factionalism amongst us by those who have different types of vested interests. As a preventive measure for such undesired moves and also for national integration, we need to know the language and culture of other linguistic groups also. So in India we have to learn at least one more Indian language other than our own mother tongue.
Among modern Indian languages, Bengali has a prominent place due to its literary wealth and also due to the achievement and recognition attained by its speakers in almost all spheres of life such as administration, journalism, Science and Technology, politics, sports etc. Consequently a good number of non-native speakers of Bangla show interest in learning the language. The International School of Dravidian Linguistics (ISDL) has a separate Bengali Unit entirely devoted to the study and research on Bengali and also to impart instructions on Bengali language and culture. Every year special classes are conducted to teach Bengali to non-Bengalis in this institute. The Bengali unit of ISDL has already published thirteen books, and the present one is the fourteenth. The Government of West Bengal is to be thanked for the cooperation and help rendered to us for the study, research and propagation of Bengali language and culture in this southern part of our country.
The work 'Bangla Basic Vocabulary by Shri Tapas Kayal and Shri Dhrubajyoti Das is a product of their experience in teaching Bengali to non-Bengalis. This book together with an earlier publication "Intensive course in Bengali" by Mahidas Bhattacharya will be a perfect package for learning Bangla for the non-Bangla mother tongue groups. The words which are needed for our day to day life are listed in this book. Since the target group is mainly the Dravidian language speaking adults the authors have given English words instead of Hindi and their Bangla correspondences. The subject wise cum alphabetic order will surely be of much help to the users. I hope this work will be received wholeheartedly by both teachers and students of Bangla language.
