Book Description
About the Book
Buddhism for Twenty-First Century' is a collection of papers in Tibetan, Hindi and English written by eminent scholars from India and abroad and presented in an International Conference on Buddhism held at Central Institute of Buddhist Studies, Leh, Ladakh (India) in August, 2004. Sitting at the beginning of 21st century, by logical analysis of present trends, one can see the predicament of today's world. No doubt, the achievements of science and technology are great, but a question still arises in the human mind whether these achievements can bring peace in the strife ridden world and can arrest ecological and mental pollution or whether the craving of man - the real cause of conflicts and violence, hence suffering can be removed by science and technology alone divorced from morality. Another question that haunts the world today is whether the man, as he is, is the master of his mind or vice-versa. The experience is that the man is guided by his mind and he acts as his mind directs or wills. If it is so, how naturally is he the master ot his mind? Is he not the slave of his mind? Realising this, the Buddha strongly pleaded for strict control over the mind and to direct it for human good. Mind is purified and controlled by morality and concentration (sila and samadhi). These ideas have been ably elaborated in these papers. Related to Sila in ascending order are samadhi (concentration) and prajna (wisdom) which lead one to Nirvana wherein one perceives true nature of the world. These have been discussed by several scholars. Dr. Bharati Puri has drawn our attention in her paper on environmental concerns and the solutions In the light of suggestions given by H. H. the Dalai Lama and so also has been pointed out by Dr. Duan Kamdee in the light of Buddha's words. Dr. Titus Leber speaks of mental pollution caused by media. The concept of Non-Violence in the views of the Buddha and Gandhi has been examined by Dr. Ravi Bhatia. In short, all important-problems responsible for human suffering find proper place in these papers with their suggested solutions in the light of the Buddha's teachings. However, as Dr. R. K. Misra has hinted in his paper, the Buddhists all over the world have a great responsibility to play an effective role for the peace and happiness in the world and also to become a model for the same. He has effectively drawn our attention to the wide gap between the precepts and the practice of Buddhism-particularly in predominantly Buddhist countries such as Thailand and Sri Lanka. It is why Prof. A. K. Narain has emphasised the need of co-ordination and unity of Buddhists and Buddhism all over the world. The papers under reference discuss these and many other problems of the present century in the light of Buddha's teachings and suggest solutions.
