This study has been undertaken with a twofold goal in mind. The first and primary goal was the analysis and descrip-tion of the syntactic structure of the Northern Kavyaka Dialect of Kannada, a Dravidian language, the second was the application of the tagmemic model of Kenneth L. Pike.
Data for the work was gathered during field work in a Karnataka village from winter, 1964, to spring, 1966. Research in the field was conducted under an American Institute of Indian Studies Junior Fellowship. I am grateful to the Havik Brahmins in Totagadde, who assisted me in this research.
