The present publication Comprehensive History and Culture of Andhra Pradesh Project: A Success Story intends to provide the readers a brief outline of the entire project, which lasted for about two decades starting from 1999.
The idea of preparing the comprehensive history of the Telugus was initiated in the First World Telugu Conference, by the then Education Minister late Sri Mandali Venkata Krishna Rao. However, the idea was not followed up after a couple of futile attempts to pursue it.
The Andhra Pradesh History Congress, an organization founded in 1976, has been continuously functioning, holding annual sessions, and publishing the proceedings regularly. It has been rendering immense service to the upcoming young historians to present and publish their research findings. The selected research papers presented in the annual sessions numbering 42 are now being digitalized.
In the annual session of the A.P.History Congress held in the University of Hyderbad in 1998, a resolution was passed to undertake the task of preparing the Comprehensive History of Andhra Pradesh. The then Governor of Andhra Pradesh, Sri C.Rangarajan who inaugurated the Conference, and the General President of the Session Prof. Velcheru Narayana Rao exhorted the History Congress officeholders to start the Comprehensive History Project at the earliest.
With the amount of one lakh of rupees saved for the project (after meeting the expenditure of holding the session) the work was initiated. An Advisory Committee was formed consisting of renowned historians, and late Prof. Sarojini Regani as Editor, and Prof. V.Ramakrishna as Working Editor. Soon preparation for the first volume, under the editorship of eminent prehistory expert late Prof. M.L.K.Murthy, started. The volume was published in 2003 by Orient Longman, New Delhi. From the second volume up to the fifth, Tulika Books, New Delhi, published the volumes, and the remaining four volumes were published by EMESCO Books, Hyderabad.
The other details of the project are provided in this handbook. Prof. K. Laxmi Narayan (Swamiji) has been a constant support and encouragement in successfully completing the project. The Andhra Pradesh History Congress is deeply indebted to him for all that he has done to the project, and editing this work too. We are grateful to many, particularly Sri Mandali Buddha Prasad, Sri Bommidala Sri Krishnamurthy, Sri Polisetty Shyam Sundar, Sri Vijaya Kumar, proprietor of EMESCO, and Dr.Chandrasekhara Reddy, editor of EMESCO, and Srimathi Indu Chandrasekhar, editor, Tulika Books, New Delhi. Our thanks are due to Dr. K.H.S.S.Sundar, Dr. Malli Gandhi, Dr. Inna Reddy, and Sri V.Dileep Kumar, for their constant help in the execution of the Project.
This Publication is dedicated to the memory of Dr. K.S. Kameswara Rao, former General Secretary, A.P. History Congress and the Working Editor of the Comprehensive History Project.
