पुरोवाक् प्रस्तुत कृति मेरे वर्षों तक चलने वाले कठिन श्रम एवं गहन अध्ययन का प्रतिफल है। अध्ययन का विषय दर्शन की चिरन्तन समस्या से संबंधित है। प्राचीन, मध्य एवं आधुनिक दर्शन की यह समस्या रही है। मेरा निष्कर्ष भी इस चिरन्तन सत्य का प्रतिपादन करता है। मेरा मानना है कि दार्शनिक समस्याओं में किसी विषय पर पूर्ण सहमति का प्रश्न ही नहीं उठता। दो पंडित किसी प्रश्न पर सहमत नहीं होते, यह उक्ति है। शंकराचार्य अपने शांकरभाष्य में एक स्थान पर कहते हैं कि व्यक्तियों की रुचियां भिन्न-भिन्न हैं अतः भिन्न विषयों पर उनके विचार भिन्न होंगे। लाइबनीज का सिद्धान्त, अगोचरता का नियम, बौद्धिक जगत् तथा भौतिक जगत् में समान रूप से लागू होता है। यह प्रकृति का सबसे बड़ा आश्चर्य है कि दो सभी प्रकार से समान घटनाओं की पुनरावृत्ति नहीं होती है। श्याम के जुड़वे बच्चों में असमानता के लक्षण थे। यह अकाट्य नियम दार्शनिक जगत् में भी लागू होता है। महाभारत में कहा गया है-नासौ मुनिर्यस्य मतं न भिन्नम्।

भूमिका काल की अवधारणा पर सभी युगों में काल के स्वरूप के संबंध में विचार होता रहा है। पुरातन युग से आधुनिक काल तक इस पर अविच्छिन्न चिन्तन होता आरहा है, फिर भी कोई निश्चित निष्कर्ष नहीं निकल सका है।
