Sukumar Ray, (1887-1923) son of Upendrakishore Roychoudhury, was one of them who have shaped the cultural Renaissance of Bengal in the 19th century. In 1906, Ray graduated with honours in physics and chemistry from Presidency College. He was trained in photography and printing technology in England at the School of Photo-Engraving and Lithography, London]. Sukumar had also drawn acclaim as an illustrator. He also developed new methods of halftone blockmaking. and technical articles about this were published in Penrose Annual in England While in England he joined the Royal Photographic Society in 1912 and remained a member until his death, gaining his Fellowship in 1922. PAGLA DASU is a collection of his short stories which were written about the school boys of the age group 12-14. (in a colonial town). Sukumar Ray is the father of the world acclaimed film director Satyajit Ray.
