It is a great pleasure to present the "Descriptive Catalogue of Oriya Manuscripts, Vol. IX" as the third volume of the series of Oriya Catalogues, which was a long felt need of the scholars. Previously, we presented the two volumes of the Oriya Descriptive Catalogues to the world of scholars, which were Volume VI and VIII and also the first five volumes and Vol. VII dealing with Sanskrit manuscripts on different subjects.
The present volume containing detailed information about 228 manuscripts arranged alphabetically, begins with the Oriya alphabet 'Chha' and ends with 'Ta'. The intro-ductions of the preceeding two volumes of the Descriptive Catalogues of Oriya manuscripts contain a portion of the history of Oriya literature. In the present volume, I have discussed about the Oriya fictions (ओड़िआ काल्पनिक काव्य), Oriya translation works (ओड़िआ अनुवाद साहित्य), and the background of the modern Oriya literature (आधुनिक आदिआ साहित्यर पृष्ठभूमि), Besides, an alphabetical list of authors has also been added as an Index of this volume to facilitate the scholars in their research work on ancient Oriya literature.
On this occasion, I acknowl dge with pleasure, my indebtedness to Sri B. K, Misra, I. A S., ex-Secretary and Director, Cultural Affairs, Orissa, who actually initiated the idea of the publication of the Descriptive Catalogues of Oriya Manuscripts, My thanks are also due to Sri H. N. Das Mahapatra, I. A. S., Secretary and Sri A. K. Biswal, I. A. S, Director, Tourism and Cultural Affairs, Orissa, for their interest shown in the publication of this work.
I am also grateful to Dr. H. C. Das, Superintendent of Museums, Orissa, who evinced keen interest in the publication of this volume.
I offer my thanks to Sri K, N. Mahapatra, the eminent historian for his kind guidance in preparation of this volume,
I am also thankful to Sri K.K. Bisoi, my assistant, who helped me a lot in the compilation of this volume.
I hope, this volume, inspite of omissions if any, will throw a flood of new light on the history of ancient and mediaeval Oriya literature.
