Foreword
Bhavan's Gandhi Centre of Science and Human Values has published in Kannada a set of ten books on various aspects of Sanskrit-lore for the benefit of young people to help them have a feel of our ancient knowledge embedded in numerous texts in Sanskrit. They have been written by erudite scholars in the respective fields. The books have been appreciated by the heads of many educational institutions and other members of the public. Swami Ranganathanandaji, head of the Ramakrishna Mission opined that they must be published in all languages of India. This series was called "Yuvajanarigagi Samskrita Vangmaya' dedicated to the fond and sacred memory of Smt. Godadevi Ramkumar, a versatile personality in amateur theatre, literature, Sanskrit and music for which she had dedicated her life. The publication was made possible with the munificent contribution from her husband Sri C.M. Ramkumar. When the Bhavan's Gandhi Centre wanted to bring-out English editions of those books, Sri C.M.Ramkumar came forward to help us with his generous donations and made this publication possible. The centre is greatly thankful to Sri Ram-kumar. At our request, Dr. T.V.Satyanarayana, author of the original "Dharmashastra and Arthashastra" in Kannada agreed to the proposal of Prof. K.H.Prabhu, a former Professor of English devoted to the cause of Sanskrit, to translate his book into English. Prof. Prabhu has done truly a good job of it. We are thankful to the author and the translator for permitting this book to be published in the "Smt. Godadevi Ramkumar Memorial Series". We hope that this book will be read widely by our youth and that it will help them develop a sense of respect for themselves and their past.

Preface
Bhavan's Gandhi Centre of Science and Human Values has been publishing monographs written in Kannada independently by famous scholars of the land on essential aspects of ancient works in Sanskrit. Dharmic, social, educational, scientific, medical and cultural achievements of our ancient seers has been truly stupendous. They have made it clear that knowledge is the ultimate thing in human life. Gandhi Centre has been doing the laudable work of identifying such works in Sanskrit and bringing them to the notice of the youth. Books on "Dharmashastra" take us to the core ideas that make our lives disciplined and to the codes of social behaviour and conduct in the ancient times. Kautilya's "Arthashastra" takes us to the gold mine of statecraft and social ethics though the word "Arthasastra" might make us think that the book meant economics in the modem sense. These books provide us with real enlightenment about the way the ancient people lived and the core values that formed the basis of their life in all aspects. If one has to comprehend the ancient Indian thought and practice, a study of these books become necessary. I was very happy when the authorities of the Bhavan's Gandhi Centre asked me to write a comprehensive but introductory book on "Dharmasastra and Arthasastra" having secondary and higher secondary students in mind. I have prepared this monograph on the basis of my study of many ancient works on the topic. I will be happy to state that Prof. K.H.Prabhu has made a faithful translation of the book in English, in the "Smt. Goda devi Ramkumar Memorial Series.
