Dr. Gouranga Chandra Rout and Dr. Samitarani Mohanty, both have received their Ph. D. Degree under my supervision. He is the first Doctorate of the State who has received Ph.D. in Music (Drama) under the auspices of Utkal University (UU), Vani Vihar, Bhubaneswar in 2007 and She is the third Doctorate and first woman Doctorate of the State as well as the first scholar of the Utkal University of Culture (UUC), Sanskruti Vihar, Madanpur, Bhubaneswar who has received Ph. D. in Performing Arts (Drama) in 2019. They have ventured their research works successfully on difficult subjects and contributed immensely to the field of research in theatre which remain as mile-stone in the history of theatre in Odisha. His topic was an application-oriented experimental research project on the novel concept "Developing Contemporary Tribal Theatre in Odisha" and her topic was study of "Group Theatre in Odisha -Retrospect and Prospect". Both the topics were historically and academically very pertinent.
I am very glad that they have prepared the research-based unique book titled "A documentary history: Group Theatre in Odisha (1955-2020)" which is published by Odisha Sangeet Natak Akademi (OSNA). So far, my knowledge is concerned there is no book either in Odia or in English covering the history of Group Theatre (GT) in Odisha. This first book in English will be an eye-opener as it brings into limelight the origin and development of GT as well as clarifies the conceptual difference between GT and Professional / Commercial Theatre. The book is first of its kind in Odisha (may be also in India) which contains more than 900 photographic documents on the history of GT in Odisha. Besides, it contains valuable, authentic information to know our contemporary theatre-culture in Odisha. The book will be definitely helpful both at the State and National level.
The Freelancer-researcher-author and the Co-researcher deserve special praise for their perseverance to study and collect such valuable materials and information which have been placed in the book. The credit goes to Odisha Sangeet Natak Akademi (OSNA) for publishing this historic book as per the need of the time.
