Preface

There are many valuable books on MN. Roy There is hardly any book attempting a comprehensive exposition and evaluation of the political thought of M.N. Roy. This work seeks to provide a comprehensive exposition of the Political Thought of M.N. Roy in a lucid manner.

Roy was more a philosopher than a mass leader. He was essentially one of the greatest thinkers of the twentieth century and truly a citizen of the world. He was least concerned about himself and most of his life suffered due to a honest and straight forward approach to different national and international problems. His chief concern was to realise freedom for himself and for others.

Roy rejected both dictatorship of the proletariat and parliamentary democracy as the solution of the present problems. He was a passionate humanist. He was impressed by the philosophy of Karl Marx in the beginning of his political career. His socialism was founded on 'Kingdom of freedom' He had faith in the creativity of man. He stressed the values of humanism as the basis of struggle for a higher form of society. He advocated scientific thinking and scientific politics free from any presupposition and dogma. He began his career as a politician but ended as a political teacher and philosopher. He was quite a complex character.

I would like to place on record my indebtedness to scholars and thinkers whose ideas enabled me to bring out this book. I gratefully acknowledge the scholars from whose works I have drawn citations viz. Dr. D.R. Bali, Dr. R.C. Gupta, Dr. V Singh, Dr. V.D. Mahajan and Dr. Bhola Singh.
