This book is an outcome of three and a half years strive. The primary is to make a compendium of the views expressed by authors from different disciplines on the background and issues related to the geo-politics of partition in West Bengal. Though the focus is by and large on West Benagal yet its Indian national linkage can never be overlooked. The articles are arranged in a timeline starting with its historical background, going through its implications on demography, society and economy and finally ending up with rehabilitation issues, development and case studies.
The aim of the book is not only for the specialized readers but also for the interested readers as well to quench their thirst on the 'partition' issues and implications in West Berngal.
Dealing with the subject in general, it has emerged that even after sixty-two years of India's Independence West Bengal is suffocating with the outcome of problem issues of 'partition'. Geo-politics in this part of India has pointed out that 'partition' of a land with its people and its resources was a purposive mischievous decision that was imposed upon.
However, in the light of the location and position of West Bengal in terms of trade and its relationships with the States in India and with its neighbours in South, South-East and North-East Asia, the geopolitical obstacles need to be resolved to enhance the mutual cooperation. It high time to realize for the policy makers to focus on the geo-political mechanisms that allow for a more bottom-up approach in future planning through which to address common problems and define shared objectives. In the words of the great poet Shri Rabindranath Tagore.
"Where the world has not been broken up into fragments by narrow domestic walls;
Where the clear stream of reason has not lost its way into the dreary
desert sand of dead habit; Where the mind is led forward by thee into ever-widening thought and action Into that heaven of freedom, my Father, let my country awake.
The present book is a collection of scholarly articles by eminent scientists/authors from different disciplines like Geography, Economics, Sociology, History etc. These research articles have revealed the different facets of geo-political consequences of 'partition' of India in its eastern sector particularly on the bordering state of West Bengal. Here partition was an incident through which over space and time the physical and cultural parameters evolved. Still today its implications are significant and when planning moves forward it cannot ignore the scars created by it.
In the present day context the role of Bangladesh and Indo-Bangladesh relationship has profound significance.
§ The articles progressed with the meaning and significance of space in geography and the role of partition over it.
§ Genesis of 1947 partition in Bengal gives out a brief time-significance follow up of partition.
§ The aftermath of political partition shattered the usage of natural drainage system and ground water utility, biotic resource conservation, food habit and culture, refugee influx problem and its impact on agriculture and urbanisation and impact on Bengali/ Indian art and culture (literature, film etc.).
§ Geopolitics of the sub-continent as determined by a multitude of socio-political and ethno-cultural factors is another important episode of study.
