Preface
Kabiguru Rabindranath Tagore's Gītāñjali has inspired hearts across the world with its haunting beauty and spiritual depth. But beyond its lyrical elegance lies an intricate tapestry of Vedāntic wisdom the timeless philosophy of unity, truth, and inner liberation. Rabindranath Tagore was a follower of the Brahmo Samaj, which was supposedly a monotheistic reformist movement within Hinduism that rejects idol worship, the caste system, and the authority of the Vedas, emphasising a formless, supreme God. Tagore's philosophy of the Divine was not an abstract idea, but manifested as the Universal Man, which is reflected in his songs and poems. To Him, Truth is a harmony between in the individual and Universal mind. Sorrow and despair arise with the limitation of the Self as an isolated Ego. While joy is in the fusion of the individual with the universal self. The Upanișads are an integral part of the Vedas, which were rejected by the Brahmo Samaj. Yet for anyone who has delved into both the Upaniṣads and the writings of Rabindranath, the entire philosophy of Brahmo Samaj and the philosophy of Kabi Guru Rabindranath is absolutely in confirmation of the Upanişadic teachings. The concept of Non-duality, the step-wise progression from the worship of deities of desires to the worship of the attributeless Brahman-Atman, the absence of birth relationship to the caste system, are all there in the Upanişads. This book is a journey where poetry meets philosophy.
