Preface

Practicing forestry in past was a subject matter of those working in department of forestry. However, with the increase in environmental awareness and understanding the amount of return which a forest enterprise can yield, common people are also showing their interest in forestry. Thus more and more forest colleges and departments are being opened in different universities and institutions. The increase in strength of departments and colleges imparting forestry education signifies a positive trend toward forest enterprise. However, the indigenous literature on forestry is still far from sufficient.

The need for a "Glossary of technical terms used in forestry and agroforestry" for the common use has been keenly felt for quite sometime. The cultivation of forest trees passes through a long process and hence forms a complex net work of the activities and needs a large number of terminologies to be explained in detail to bring out their full meaning. Thus, a need was felt to gather all possible information to compile the terms in the form of glossary. A sincere effort has been made to exploit each and every term in its true sense and spirit. Throughout the text, a cross reference and the possible and appropriate synonymous have also been cited to make it more comprehensive. The main purpose of the glossary is to provide a means of achieving a common understanding of the vocabulary used in forestry and agroforestry, and to promote the use of standard terminology.
