It is a matter of great pleasure that we are celebrating the eightieth birthday of Professor K. G. Paulose, a veteran scholar of Sanskrit and Classical theatre who has enriched the cultural life of Kerala with his manifold contribution for decades. The fact that the eightieth birth year of Prof. T. K. Sarala, his partner in life and his academic activities alike, synchronises with this enhances the pleasure of their friends and students alike. Their fruitful and happy married life reminds one of the lofty ideals of wedded life in Indian tradition. Their erudition, goodnaturedness, closeness with students and earnest campaign for the upliftment of Sanskrit studies are all well known.
On this auspicious occation, the students and admirers of the couple have decided to publish three felicitation volumes, one each in Sanskrit, English and Malayalam. The Sanskrit volume is given the name 'Samskrtamayukhah' and the Malayalam Volume 'Sumanusam', reminding one of the expressions of Bhavabhuti describing ideal married life. The English volume is aptly titled 'Natyakairali' as it highlights the contributions made by Prof. Paulose towards classical theatre studies, which will be interesting to the English speaking readers outside Kerala also. Thanks to the dedication and determination of the team, by which this project could be accomplished well within the time limit set.
The present volume is divided into three sections. The first section is devoted to articles on various Sastras written by scholars of repute. The second section reproduces the famous talk entitled Punnasseriprabhasanam delivered by the great Sanskrit scholar and preceptor, Punnasseri Nambi Neelakantha Sarma, the founder of the famous Sanskrit College of Pattambi. It may be recalled in this connection that it was Prof. Paulose who published this rare work of immense cultural value for the first time. The third section contains the articles and lectures of Prof. Paulose which would give us an idea of the range and depth of his all round scholarship.
Dr. C. M. Neelakandhan has done a commendable job in collecting and editing all these articles within the stipulated time.
He has a knack for selecting the right people for the job and to get their contributions sent promptly. A special thanks to all our learned contributors for readily responding to our request and for making available their articles.
With immense delight, we present this volume to the readers and scholars as well.
It is a matter of immense pleasure that three felicitation volumes are being published in the event of the 80th birthday celebrations of our revered Gurus, couples, Prof. T.K.Sarala and Prof.K.G.Paulose, in Sanskrit, Malayalam and English. They are entitled 'Guruvandanam Samskrtamayukhah', 'Guruvandanam - Sumanusam' and Guru-vandanam - Natyakairali respectively. Both Prof. Sarala and Prof. Paulose are well known in the fields of literature, culture, different knowledge systems in Sanskrit, education, theatrical arts etc. and are well respected in these fields with their sincere contributions. Both, after getting M.A. in Sanskrit Sahitya, were teachers in different Sanskrit colleges in Kerala and retired as principals from Govt. Sanskrit College, Trippunithura. Apart from this, Prof. Paulose has worked in different high positions which is continuing even now. Registar of Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit, Kalady, Kerala; first Vice-chancellor of Kerala Kalamandalam Deemed University for Art and Culture; Publication Director of Aryavaidyasala, Kottakkal, Kerala; Chairman, Veliyanad Chinmaya International Sodh Sansthan; Fellow at Indian Institute of Advanced Studies, Simla etc. are some high positions Prof. Paulose has adorned contributing much to the fields of art, literature, culture and the like. Prof. Paulose is the author of several books and research articles in Sanskrit, English and Malayalam. Prof. Sarala also has published some significant translations and studies of Puranas etc. in Malayalam.
Prof. Paulose is specially proficient and a scholar in the field of Kerala Sanskrit theatre, Kutiyattam. His two major works in the field published from manuscripts with study in English, Natankusa and Vyangyavyakhya are recognised and appreciated by scholars of national and interantional reputation in the field. There are many other works in English and Malayalam of similar stature related to Kutiyattam written by Prof. Paulose. The main theme of the volume in English is theatrical studies and so it has been named Natyakairali Total contributions of Prof. Sarala and Prof. Paulose in the fields of literature, culture, Sastras etc. are included in the Malayalam volume entitled Sumanusam.

Maheswaran in the end of his article gives a note on some personal experience of how Prof. Paulose encouraged and promoted him in Sanskrit Sastra studies while he was a BA Student when he went for a Vakyarthasadas at Trippunithra. In the end of the first part, a verse in Sanskrit praising Prof. Paulose by his student Dr.K.R.Prabhakaran, is also given.
The second part of Samskrtamayukhah contains the book Raghuvamsaprabhasanam by the celebrated Kerala Sanskrit Scholar and propagator of Sanskrit studies, Punnasseri Nilakantha Sarma. The work was first noticed in transcripts by Prof. Paulose which he edited and published years before from Trippunithura Sanskrit College, the copies of which are very rarely available now. It is a beautiful study and appreciation of Raghuvamsa of Kalidasa which is included in the second part so that it will be available to the readers again. The Editor's note of the first edition by Prof. Paulose and his article 'Punnasseri Nambi Nilakantha Sarma and Kerala Sanskrit Education' are given in the beginning there.
