Tibet is where the earth meets the sky. Since time immemorial, its gentle and peace-loving inhabitants have been following Buddhism and leading an austere and simple life. In 1951, Tibet was occupied by China. H.H. the fourteenth Dalai Lama, the spiritual and political head of Tibet, fled to India in March 1959. The people of Tibet received this news with great shock and pain; and, thereafter, about 100,000 Tibetans followed him to India where they found shelter as refugees. Since then, he has been carrying on his relentless crusade for the liberation of his country and for alleviating the sufferings of the Tibetans. The Dalai Lama has also been preaching peace and international brotherhood around the globe.
I had the privilege of meeting him for the first time in 1971 in Bodhgaya, whereafter I have been continuously learning and practising his spiritual philosophy. My interest in Tibet gradually increased and I took it up as a subject of my study and research, in the course of which I have made several visits to that enchanting land. I consider myself really fortunate that those visits gave me some unique opportunities of seeing Tibet and the Buddhist monasteries from very close quarters.
It is my wish and desire to share these experiences, through this book, with the readers and arouse in them interest and appreciation about Tibet and the teachings of H.H., The Dalai Lama.
