About The Author
Shyamal Kumar Pramanik is a remarkable writer of sub-altern literature and history. Born in a village named Nila under Diamond Harbour Sub-division of South 24 Parganas district in West Bengal on 4" March 1959, he passed his MA in History from University of Calcutta. He was an officer in Reserve Bank of India. Various books of his poems, short stories, novels, essays, and histories have been published already. His autobiography has also been published. His writings have been discussed in many national and international journals and included in the syllabus of some universities across the country. His collection of short stories has been translated in English by the Centre for Translation of Indian Languages, Jadavpur university. Many of his poems and short stories have also been translated in Hindi and other Indian Languages. He has been awarded the Ananya Nandanik Sahitya Puraskar in the year 2000 and the Shakti Kumar Sarkar Puraskar in 2006.
Sunil Basak is currently pursuing his PhD in Cultural Studies at Centre for Studies in Social Sciences, Calcutta, affiliated to University of Jadavpur, West Bengal. He was born in 1996 at Fulia, in Nadia district, West Bengal. He has completed his under-graduation and post-graduation in English Literature and Language from University of Kalyani, West Bengal. His area of research encompasses the question of caste in Bengal with a special emphasis of Dalit autobiographies in post-partitioned West Bengal. Trying to understand the concept called Dalit consciousness, his interest also includes the questions of language, body, identity, and politics in Dalit writings.
Introduction
India has an ancient history. The oldest civilization in the world. the Indus civilization of India, is contemporary with the civilizations of Egypt, Babylon, and China. This civilization was built about five thousand years ago. Agriculture, industry, and commerce left traces of this era. Burnt brick storeyed houses, well-developed sewage system, baths, barns, inscriptions of the Indus civilization have been found there. Not only the Indus Civilization but also many other civilizations have been discovered in various places in the ancient history of India. Mahasthangarh is the capital of the ancient Pundradesh of eastern India. The ruins of Mahasthangarh exist on the banks of the Karatoa River near the city of Bogra in Bangladesh. The contribution of this civilization in the history of India is significant. The book on 'Pundradesh and Its History' discusses the history of this ancient civilization of Eastern India and its socio-economic status according to the stream of sub-altern history. Along with this, the current socio-economic position of ancient Paundra caste is a significant chapter of this book.
