Book Description
Preface
The little volumes on HUMAN VALUES IN INDIAN LITERATURE like the Ramayana, the Mahabharata, the Bhagavadgīta, Vachana, Haridasa, Bengalee and Punjabi Literature were prepared by eminent scholars in their respective fields: Dr. N.S. Anantha Rangacharya on the Bhagavadgita, Dr. S.Ramaswamy, Dr. R.Ganesh and Vid S.Rajagopal Sharma on "Human Values in the Ramayana and the Mahabharata, Dr. Siddayya Puranik on Vachana Literature, Prof. K.T.Pandurangi and Prof. R.G.Kulkarni on "Haridasa Literature, Dr. Moutushi S.Chakravartee on Bengali Literature, Mrs. Gurbinder Chahal and Dr. Satishkumar Verma on Punjabi Literature". Each title on Human Values of this book, was prepared for our Book-pack series titled "Book-pack for the Young" researched and published by Bhavan's Gandhi Centre of Science and Human Values, Bengaluru in 1990's and it received unprecedented acclaim from the seers and scholars as a much needed and timely publication to initiate the young into the marvels of our ancient culture, value system and wisdom. The Indian culture is both ancient and elevating. India is a country of many religions and languages. Due to employment etc., now-a-days people are not bound to live in the same region. If they understand their culture, values and languages better they can easily spread the values in other regions too. In all our regional literature the main theme and motto is to propagate our enriched culture, value system to all. If we carefully studied and understood them, every one can lead a life of peace and contentment. That is the reason why we felt the need to help young people clearly understand the many dimensions of the cultures together in an integrated series. As, perhaps, the youth of the day has not grasped it properly, we see a small section dangerously pursuing perverse paths which spell out catastrophe. Realising this truth, Dr. H.K.Ranganath, the Head of the Bhavan's Gandhi Centre of Science and Human Values during 1995-2003, had taken up the meaningful project of research and publication of these monographs, which gained all-round appreciation.

Introduction
The Ramayana and the Mahabharata are the two sparkling eyes of Indian culture and heritage, which can behold any sublime vision of human and super-human values. It is least to say that these two mighty epics of titanic dimensions have always moulded and guided the Indian ethos in an unparalleled way in a whole range of world heritage. It is neither a tall claim nor an over-ambitious statement. If we say that, these two towering epics take the world-pride and are capable of becoming the fountainhead of values to the universe. The real greatness of these two epics lies in their multi-dimensional appeal. It is needless to say that the story, theme, plot, poetry, description, characterization, etc. from the literary point of view are simply superb in these classics. However, as the encyclopedia of culture, morals, ethics, values and ideals they once again triumph their glory and grandeur. The two epics the Ramayana and the Mahabharata are ten times the volume of Homer's Greek epics viz., the Iliad and the Odyssey. By the gamut itself, one can understand the amount of wisdom that these books have for us. More than half of the volume of the Mahabharata is devoted to the thought on various instrumental values. Human values and the ultimate value through direction, exposition, conversation, narration etc., but in the Ramayana though the amount of explicit value preaching is less, the whole epic is an implicit expression of values of the highest order. Here we very frequently come across the very demonstration of values being practised by the epic characters which is seldom seen in the Mahabharata. That is why culling out explicit verses from the Ramayana, depicting the human values is difficult. Almost all verses are associated with the plot and the theme. Hence it is almost impossible to isolate the value from the situation which has enshrined the same. And we should notice that this is the real beauty of value consciousness. Values are not for preaching, they are for practising. Here is a pilot effort in a limited way to bring out a few essential human values from these epics specially intended for the young.
