By the way of preface to this volume, I have little to add to what I have already said about my work and myself in the preface of the first volume.

I take this occassion only to add that for various reasons, it was thought wise not to follow the Hindi edition in having the entire work into one volume and to have two separate volumes, one for political history and the other for the cultural history. Volume One was published earlier and here is the Volume Two.

This volume constitutes of six chapters; they deal with the Polity and Administration, Social Life, Agriculture, Commerce and Currency, Religion and Philosophy, Literature and Arts and Crafts. Besides, a Bibliography is appended at the end, where not only those book and papers are enlisted that are referred to in this work (Vols. I and II) but also those that are not used knowingly or unknowingly. Many of them came to my notice when the script was complete. Here, it may be said that it is the largest bibliography of its kind and covers almost all the important papers; yet I would not dare to claim that it is by any means exhaustive. There may be many papers that might not have come to my notice. Any way, I hope that this bibliography would serve as ready reference to all those who are interested in the researches of the history of the period.

By the way of personal explanation, I would like to say that when it was decided to split the work into two volumes, it was hoped that this volume would immediatly follow its sister volume; the type script of this volume was simultaneously ready for the press. There was not the least appre hension that such a long time, more than six years, would elapse before it could be placed in the hands of the readers. This intordinate delay must have annoyed most of them but the fact remains that under unforeseen circumstances, it was not possible for the Printers and Publishers both, to have it out at any date earlier. Placing my apologies to the readers, I would only say it is better late than never. I hope they would share my satisfaction at the publication of the volume.
