When the present office-bearers of the Indian History Congress Association took charge in March 1965, there was a deficit of approximately Rupees Seven thousand. It was therefore not possible to make any arrangement for the publication of the Proceedings Volume of the Ranchi Session (1964). However, a generous grant of Rs. 5,000 by Shri M. C. Chagla, formerly Union Minister of Education, out of his discretionary fund, and a donation of Rs, 1,000 by the late His Holiness Syedna Tahir Saifuddin, Chancellor, of the Aligarh University, enabled us to reduce the deficit appreciably. The Trustees of Sir Dorabji Tata, Bombay, were again generous enough to sanction a grant of Rs. 1,000 as a result of which the deficit was wiped out. I am extremely grateful to all these donors for the assistance they have given us.
It was only when the amounts of these grants were realised that the Proceedings could be sent to the press. Unfortunately, Aligarh does not have any modern press and therefore we had to go to a press at Allahabad. The delay in printing has been inordinate and I have therefore taken the liberty of splitting up the Proceedings Volume of the Ranchi session. Part I of the Proceedings comprising Section I (Ancient India) is being presented to members. Part II and the Proceedings Volume of the Allahabad Session (1965), will, it is hoped, be presented to the members soon. The inconvenience caused to the members is sincerely regretted.
The papers have been arranged according to subject-matter. Inadequacy of funds and the consequent paucity of space did not allow many good papers to be published in full. For the same reasons, papers which were not presented at the session by the authors personally, had to be left out.
I am extremely grateful to the Sectional Presidents for having edited the papers and to Dr. Romila Thapar for having offered valuable suggestions. My colleague, Mr. A. Jan Qaisar, has had to shoulder the responsibility of preparing the press copy and correcting the proofs. I am deeply beholden to him.
