Among the myriad divinities in India, the goddesses claim a significant place. Rich in mythology and often paradoxical in nature the scope to study the goddesses is immense. In Invoking Goddesses: Gender Politics in Indian Religion different Indian goddesses are studied spanning many millennia, using detailed linguistic analysis of hymns, prayers, iconography, inscriptions, actual ritual performances and interviews of practitioners. Through its study of different goddesses, this collection, sensitizes readers to a gendered approach to the politics of divinities.
About the Author
Nilima Chitgopekar teaches History at the Jesus and Mary Collage, University of Delhi. She is the author of Encountering Sivaism: The Deity, the Milieu, the Entourage.
