Book Description
Preface

The dialogue between the nine sages and the King Nimi conveyed by Narada to Vasudeva contains very significant lessons on Bhakti and Karma i.e., devotion and duty.

The main significance of this dialogue is highlighting the importance of complete devotion to the Lord which gives deep insight into philosophical principles contained in the Vedanta. Though it is generally believed that during Kaliyuga there is no incarnation of Lord Vishnu, after his incarnation as Lord Krishna at the end of Dwapara Yuga and his incarnation as Kalki at the end of Kaliyuga, the nine saints give us the encouraging information that throughout Kaliyuga great saints who have completely surrendered themselves to Lord Narayana will appear now and then. One of the sages says:

Kalau kalu bhavisyanti Narayana parayanah !

This gives us hope that great and enlightened persons will be born in this world to give us sufficient moral strength to put up with the trials and tribulations in this world and attain Godhead.

The English translation is mainly based on the translation of Sri N. Raghunatha Iyer, the great admirer of Srimad Bhagavatam, a profound scholar in English and Sanskrit and a person deeply committed to our ancient culture and tradition.

The English translation is bound to be of great benefit to the readers who are interested in getting familiar with the teachings contained in Srimad Bhagavatam.

This publication is dedicated to the memory of Sri P. Narayanaswamy Iyer (1890-1977), an erudite scholar and a prolific writer. Recently the Academy published the book ‘Manache Sloka and Atmarama of Samartha Ramadasa’ with English rendering and notes by Sri Narayanaswamy Iyer. He was an ardent devotee of Srimad Bhagavatam.

The publication of this book is made possible by the financial help rendered by Sri N. Ramamoorthy, Sri N. Balasubramanian and Sri N. Panchapakesan, sons of Sri P. Narayanaswamy Iyer. The Academy remains grateful to them.

The Academy is beholden to the band of research scholars of the K.S.R. Institute Mrs. Sita Sundar Ram, Mrs. V. Uma Maheswari, Mrs. B. Ramadevi, Mr. V. Ramakrishnan, Mr. S.N. Krishna, Mrs. N. Annapoorna and Mrs. R. Subasri for proof-reading and preparing the notes under the supervision of Dr. V. Kameswari, Director of the Institute.

Ms. K. Vidyuta is to be thanked for the neat typing and formatting the text in a short time of a fortnight and Mr. E.D. Prabhu, for keying in the Sanskrit verses.
