Book Description
About The Book

The present volume aims at charting out à profile of Kashmir's ecology and environment. Nature has endowed the vale of Kashmir with an abundance of fertile soil, rainfall, and sunlight. The physiographic frame- work is superb. The pollution, de- forestation, degradation of the soil and natural catastrophies are creating ecological imbalance. If not checked now this would bring misery and suffering and affect the tourist trade of the State.

A humble attempt has been made to offer a collection of papers dealing with various aspects of ecology and environment. An attempt has been made by scholars and experts to suggest measures for the cleanliness of the Dal, afforestation of the catchment areas to prevent inflow of nutrients and soil into the lakes, and steps to be taken to improve the sanitation, reforestation, soil conservation and to prevent the natural catastrophies.

It is a humble beginning and hoped that it will prove very useful to the readers who care for the environment and ecology of Kashmir.

Preface

The present book on the environmental aspects of Kashmir aims at providing a glimpse of ecological and environmental problems of the beautiful vale of Kashmir. Concern with environmental problems has been on the rise during the recent years. The ecological problems embrace diverse aspects, ranging from the economic, social and psychological problems of human settlements to the management and use of natural resources and the conservation of natural habitats. The environmental problems of Kashmir are not the side-effects of excessive industrialisation, they reflect the inadequacy of development.

I am conscious that the broad brush picture of the subject offered in the present book leaves out many important details but that could not be helped as negligible work has been done in this field. It is a humble beginning and it is hoped that the readers will find the matter most informative and useful.

I gratefully acknowledge the permission of the authors of various books and articles who very kindly permitted to make use of their articles and/or matter in this book. My thanks are due to the chief editor and editors of the "Science Reporter" for their permission to reproduce the matter from the various issues of the Journal, published by the Publication and Information Director- ate, New Delhi.
