For about the last two decades, I have been trying to develop a central theme on Philosophy, Science and Society in papers presented in various seminars in India and abroad, in special lectures delivered in different Universities and in a few publications inclusive of some felicitation volumes. These are being presented here in the form of a connected discourse with minor modifications felt necessary for the purpose. Repetition of a few authorities quoted could not unfortunately be avoided in different contexts because of their implications being wider than substantiating a single point. Some of the points rather cryptically mentioned in these papers are sought to be more extensively discussed in my other books which, therefore, had to be referred to
The main point sought to be emphasised here is that the vast amount of knowledge laboriously acquired by humanity during the last several millennia remains incompletely utilised for human welfare because of the spell of an illusion necessarily resulting from the division of society into antagonistic classes; hence is the need of active intervention for removing the class structure of society. This is being increasingly felt in our times when we live under fear of total extinction on the one hand and of the hope of a bountiful existence undreamt of hitherto before, so great are the possibilities of knowledge in the general fund of human culture. But it all depends on whether we remain complacent under the general structure of class society-the most menacing form of which is assumed by contemporary imperialism -or move forward for actively changing it.
I take this opportunity to express my profound sense of gratitude to those that gave me the opportunity of preparing and presenting the papers that have gone to the preparation of the present book as well as to the editors and publishers of the journals and books in which these papers received their first printed forms.
