Foreword There was a phase during the development of a Slovak identity in our country, when a pan-Slavic identity was more vital for us, and the Slovaks considered Slovakia as the fulcrum of a vast Slav- world. A similar messianic mentality already prevailed in the Polish and Russian culture and literature, in which the pan-Slavinism of Slovakia laid little stress on national components, and was more concerned about the synthesis of a Slav culture. The turn of the last century saw a new era in the history of modern Slovak litera- ture, in which a fresh thinking on life and a new poetic language emerged. The symbolism became a fundamental element in the poetry. The poetry of the Slovak modern-era presents a contrast to the realistic prose represented by Ivan Krasko, Ludmila Groeblova and Janko Jesenky. One of the most important figures between the two world wars was Ladislav Novomesky, whose poetry was in- fluenced by Czeck poetics. In the 1990s the drama resumed its link with the avant-garde of the 30s, which had fallen into a sort of winter-sleep.
