INTRODUCTION

Ayurveda, the science of human life has always seen man as a part of the larger cosmos. This science, the epitome of ancient Indian wisdom, has analysed the human being and his surroundings at all levels, tried to interpret and find the various causes and effects of everything that was running in relation to the human and the world where he is put in to live. Ayurveda has tried to find out the intricacies behind human functioning and behavior. It has tried to understand the physiological and pathological changes at the physical, mental and spiritual levels.

Hence, the approach of Ayurveda towards the disease and the diseased is unique. The theories are formulated after constant search and research, observations, analysis and then refined into broad fundamental principles. These principles which are applied through different treatment modalities can accommodate even recent advances in disease manifestations.

Panchakarma, the penta biopurificatory procedures, are one among the strongest weapons in Ayurveda to combat the diseases by reversing the pathogenesis and stimulating the correctional process of the body itself, in an era of reductionism and super specialisation, the holistic approach of Ayurveda has paramount relevance.

Drug delivery system was well studied, experimented and documented in Ayurveda. Sneha was recognised as an important mode of drug delivery to reach the target tissues anywhere in the body. Hence, Snehapana has its utmost relevance as a treatment modality.
