Preface

To lead a life in accordance with the life and teachings of Buddha is to lead oneself towards excellence, ascent and transcendence. It is to enter, as it were, into the cathedral of serenity and poignance, calmness and brilliance. As a thinker and philosopher par excellence, Rabindranath Tagore has delved deep into the grandeur and mystery of life with all its diverse manifestations and has brought about a crystallised pattern of creative contributions that bear a distinctive stamp of the philosophy of Buddhism.

"Brought up," as Tagore speaks about himself in the Preface to Sadhana, "in a family where texts of the Upanishad’s are used in daily worship; and he has had before him the example of his father who lived his long life in the closest communion with God, while not neglecting his duties to the world, or allowing his keen interest in all human affairs to suffer any abatement," he has always experimented on life with all its luminous possibilities of realisation in fullness.

Pregnant with diverse experiences of life, Tagore has explored new pathways in his creative activities. Towards the waning years of his life, Convalescence (Arogya), a masterpiece in his poetic contributions, brings forth the essence of his endless preparation for journey to eternity, which has its apposite background adroitly depicted in the Preface as above: "The meaning of living words that come out of the experience of great hearts can never be exhausted by any one system of logical interpretation. They have to be endlessly explained by the commentaries of individual lives and they gain an added mystery in each new revelation. To me the verses of the Upanishads and the teachings of Buddha have ever been things of the spirit and therefore endowed with boundless vital growth; and I have used them both in my own life and in my preaching, as being instinct with individual meaning for me as for others, and awaiting for their confirmation, my own special testimony, which must have its value because of its individuality." In "Philosophy of Buddhism in Rabindranath’s Convalescence (Arogya): A Critical Study," a humble attempt has been made to explore Tagore’s endless explorations on the meaning and philosophy of life in terms of Buddhism as well as with the viewpoints suggested by him as above.

Tagore’s songs of devotion are of perennial interest to anyone in quest of the All Beautiful. In these songs what he endlessly strives for is to have the finest glimpse of spiritual excellence, which has its extensive analysis and evaluation in "Rabindranath Tagore’s Devotional Songs : A Critical Appreciation."

Gitanjali is Tagore’s acme of creative genius. It shows us how and in which direction life should be lived in purity and poignance, ascent and excellence. "Embracing the All Serene: A Critique on Gitanjali" is a study on this end-in-view.

Education as it appears nowadays, is in utter ukase. It neither allows us to have a glimpse of our own selves always pining for efflorescence nor gives us an apt entry into the world of joy and freedom—a world that Tagore considers to be of unparalleled and immense value for fullness. "Education for Joy and Freedom: Tagore’s Thoughts and Experiments" might steer us towards newer attempts to overhaul education in the right perspective of education to be as it ought to be.

"The Mystic World in Tagore’s Songs of Love" is an extensive analysis of how Tagore delineates love with the Spirit Eternal and enjoys the warmth of the All Love.
