Book Description

Foreword

The State Museum of Odisha enjoys a unique place in the country as the storehouse of rare manuscripts, especially the palm leaf ones the museum's most prized collection. Attempts have been made to make available the value and relevance of these manuscripts to the discerning and discriminating public. One such programme is publishing a senes of rare manuscripts with critical analysis and commentary by experts. Raga Chitra is one such publication.

Odisha has received world-wide appreciation since long for its music, literature and fine arts. Not only in the medium of stones such artistic creations are found but also in the medium of the palm-leaf This Manuscript was first published in the form of a book in 1966 being edited by Kavichandra Kalicharana Pattanaik. No further editions followed after this book. However the edition published by Kavichandra Kalicharana Pattanaik still remains the most authentic source book, although it is now out of stock

Kavichandra Kalicharana Pattanaik, in his preface to the edition has referred to the sources from where he had collected the original manuscript he claims. The manuscript was obtained from an octogenarian lady of an Odisi hamlet who used to offer pujas to all her stock of palm-leaf pothis-anointing them with thick sandalwood and vermillion paste. She was the resident of a South Odisha village named Mundamarai within the precincts of the one-time Zamindari of Dharakote.

Again he has mentioned when he was moving throughout odisha in search of an authentic palm-leaf Odisi Raga-Chitra Manuscript to prove Odisi (Music) as a form of clasical music and finally he became overwhelmed in delight at this wonderful discovery. Kavichandra, the person mainly responsible for the revival of Odisi music and dance and also for its present growth and vigour, has taken great pain to decipher the ancient pothi-written in indistinct and minute lettering. The translation
