It has long been a custom to observe the month of Karkidaka (July-August), as the month of Rāmāyaņa. It is also a month when people undergo hardship due to the heavy rains. Many families are forced to wrestle with disease and hunger. Humanity does not have the strength to resist Nature. Awakening our inner strength is the only way to withstand and overcome adversities. No force can destroy us if our inner potential, the strength of our inner self, has awakened. The Rāmāyaņa is the ideal book, reading which we can realize and awaken our inner strength.
If we consider the challenges faced by the noble characters of the Rāmāyaņa, our difficulties will seem trivial. Because of this, the Rāmāyaņa gives us the inner strength to overcome any obstacle. Each character helps us to sharpen the weapons we need for life's battles.
The characters of the Rāmāyaņa are alive for us and show us what to do and what not to do in life's situations. If we reflect on their words and actions and imbibe them in our life's journey, we will not falter. To gain this capacity, we must approach the Rāmāyaņa with our hearts.
The Rāmāyaņa Smriti contains a concise collec-tion of Amma's Rāmāyaņa messages given as part of the Ramayana month observances. Amma looks at the Rāmāyana's message against the background of today's times. It will inspire us and give us the strength to move forward on the path of dharma without faltering.
