Mental health is the adjustment of human beings to the world and with each other with maximum effectiveness and happiness. Mental health is not just the absence of mental illness. It is defined as a state of well-being in which every individual realizes his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community (WHO, 2007). The state of one's mental health is greatly determined by one's attitude towards life. While the negative and pessimistic attitude may draft him towards the feeling of inferiority, hostility towards environment, frustrations and agonies of life; the positive and optimistic outlook may keep one smiling by providing sufficient strength and patience in facing the realities of life.
In the present day context, mental health issues are important as the WHO estimates that at any point of time a large number of people suffer from different form of mental, behavioural and neurological disorders. So, spreading awareness to people regarding mental health is really important. Keeping this in mind, a two day UGC sponsored national seminar 'Recent Approaches in Mental Health Research' was organized by Department of Psychology, Barrackpore Rastraguru Surendranath College in collaboration with Department of Applied Psychology, University of Calcutta, to exchange views an ideas on mental health among psychologists and students, and to enrich them with expertise knowledge from academicians and experts from different part of the country.
This edited volume is thus and attempt to compile the papers presented at the seminar held on 16th and 17th August, 2013. The papers were accepted after blind reviewed by experts and with necessary changes in some cases as suggested by the reviewers to improve the quality of this volume. Altogether 19 papers have been segmented in four sections. Papers related to Occupational Mental Health are organized in Section-I, papers related to Students' Mental Health are arranged in Section-II. The paper on Mental Disorders is placed under Section III and the papers on Community Mental Health are arranged in Section - IV.
