Recent Studies in Sanskrit and Indo-logy is an anthology of learned essays on Sanskrit and Indological topics con-tributed by eminent scholars, both Indian and foreign, and dedicated by his friends, associates and pupils to Prof. Jagannath Agrawal, a moving encyclopaedia of Sanskrit and Indic studies, in recognition of his rich and distinct contribution, both as a teacher and a scholar, to the field of Sanskrit and Indology. The articles included in this volume command, within this field, a wide range covering Vedic studies; Indian religion and philosophy; classical Sanskrit literature and poetics; and ancient Indian history, culture and archaeology. Though varying widely in theme, scope and treatment and also in presentation, these articles richly re-present the latest trends in studies in the field of Sanskrit and Indology and faithfully reflect the quality of research now being carried on in its various furrows.
Dr. Dharmendra Kumar Gupta (b. October 19, 1933), the editor of this anthology of learned essays, is Professor and Head of the Department of Sanskrit at Punjabi University, Patiala. A respectful pupil of Prof. Jagannath Agrawal, he did his M.A. in Sanskrit in the First Class with First Position in September, 1956, and received his Doctorate from Panjab University, Chandigarh, in 1966, on his thesis, A Critical Study of Dandin and his Works, which appeared in book form, from Delhi, in 1970. His other works include Society and Culture in the Time of Dandin (Delhi, 1972); Dandin's Kavyadarsa, edited with his own Sanskrit commentary and Hindi exposition (Delhi, 1973); Sarojini, a textbook in Sanskrit (Punjabi University, Patiala, 1973); Svapnavasavadatta of Bhasa, edited with introduction and critical notes (De'hi, 1975); and Ramayana of Valmiki, Punjabi translation edited for the Languages Department, Patiala (1979), besides three scores of research and review articles. Presently he is engaged in editing Padmacandrakosa, a comprehensive Sanskrit-Hindi dictionary, in two volumes.
