Book Description
Foreword

Some time ago, I received a report of Student Performance at University College, London. A similar survey was made in the case of the students of the London School of Economics by Sir Alexander Carr Saunders. In 1956, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Liverpool, Sir James Mountford made a survey of the students of his University. No such survey has been made as regards the achievement of students, who are admitted to our Universities. I, therefore, asked Mrs. Bhanot of our Statistics Department to undertake this work. She has just finished her work and submitted her report. I have great pleasure in writing a foreword to this. So much has been said about wastage and stagnation in our Universities that I thought it would be better to get some clear statistical picture of it, at least as far as the Baroda University is concerned. Much of the wastage is due to the fact that a large number of students seek admission to our Universities, who have not the capacity to benefit by higher education. They join the Universities for having no better alternative.

From the national point of view this is a very great waste of money and waste of energy. Wastage and stagnation may also be due probably to some defect in our examination system and probably our teaching methods. I wish more such surveys could be undertaken, so that we may be in a position to find out the underlying causes of this wastage and may take effective remedial action. I congratulate Mrs. Bhanot for her very painstaking and careful survey. I am sure it would be of very great assistance to all those, who are concerned with our University teaching and administration.
