Book Description
Preface

I am pleased to present this edited volume titled 'Revisiting the Cultural Heritage of South Ast Emerging Trends to the academia which is a culmination of the proceedings of the Seventh International Congress of the Society of South Asian Archaeology (SOSAA). The congresa odatly organised by the Department of History and Archaeology, University of Sri Jayewardenepura, Colombo, Sri Lanka and Society of South Asian Archaeology (SOSAA), Pune in collaboration with Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre, High Commission of India Colombo, Sri Lanka and Sri Lanka National Commission for UNESCO was held in online mode from 18th September 2020 to 21st September 2020.

The Society of South Asian Archaeology was established in the year 2005 to provide an academic platform for archaeological and anthropological research as well as for heritage studies, to create awareness and inquisitiveness amongst common people and students about the cultural heritage of South Asian Archaeology and to promote young scholars to undertake research activities in the various fields of South Asian Archaeology The SOSAA brings Archaeologists, Historians, Anthropologists, Social Scientists and Archaeological Scientists and others on one platform to discuss some of the common issues related to population movement, cultural interaction, trade exchange, the impact of climate on cultures and social formation. The SOSAA; thus, provides an opportunity to exchange information, ideas and insights into new discoveries made from the last decades onward in South Asia.

The Society of South Asian Archaeology has been organising International Congress since 2006 to share a common platform for scholars from South Asia and beyond. The previous six conferences of SOSAA were highly successful because of the direct interactions and dialogues between scholars from various South Asian and Asian countries including China, Japan, South Korea and Iran. The Seventh International Congress held in online mode due to the Covid-19 pandemic, more than 175 scholars presented papers on diverse themes such as recent researches in Archaeology. Heritage Studies and Ancient Indian Culture such as prehistory and Protohistory of South Asia, Rock Art, Harappan studies, Megalithic studies, Historical Archaeology, Archaeology of Religion, Art and Architecture of South Asia, Epigraphy, Numismatics, Museum studies, Memorial Stones, Folk Traditions and Ethnographic Survey, etc. Besides these thematic panels, 4 special sessions were also organised on Rakhigarhi Excavation Project, Rajagala Archaeological Research Project, Archaeology of Sri Lanka and Recent Perspective on Archaeology of Buddhism.

I am very glad to inform that around 75 per cent of the paper presenters were post-doctoral, doctoral and post-graduate students, which clearly attests that the main purpose behind the establishment of the Society of South Asian Archaeology is marching towards its fulfilment. The genesis of thought-processes that have had emerged through this International Congress has provided definite new directions for future research in the fields of South Asian Archaeology, History, Anthropology and Cultural Studies.

The volume titled 'Revisiting the Cultural Heritage of South Asia: Emerging Trends consists of u articles that represent different themes of Archaeology. Heritage Studies and Ancient Indian Culture, as Rock Art, Harappan Culture, Buddhist Architecture, Rock Cat Architecture, Memorial Stones, Temple Architecture, Geospatial Studies, Folk Traditions and Ethnographic Survey and so on The first article titled 'Rock Art as Memory: Some Reflections on Pleistocene Holocene Cultural Transition in the Northern Vindhyas, Uttar Pradesh' by Ajay Pratap argues that rock art icons and images should be regarded as products of human skill, meant for encoding and storing collective 'memory, on a long-term basis. This article discusses that Rock art data could and should have been used to outline the evolving and changing nature of Pleistocene societies undergoing an economic transformation under post-Pleistocene changing climates of the Vindhyas.

The second article titled "Zoomorphism in Harappan Seals: A Civilisational Psyche to Establish the Consciousness of its Origins at the Zenith of Urban Ascendance by Asmita Sikdar, provides analytical discussion regarding the visual representations of the zoomorphs on the Harappan seals.

The third article by Ishani Sinha titled 'Revision of Chronology of Kesariya Stúpa discusses how archaeological findings and textual references do not support the possible date of the Kesariya Stúpa. as assigned by the excavators. She has re examined the architectural and art historical remains and associated material culture unearthed during the archaeological excavations of the Stupa and thus proposed revised dates of the last phase of construction to around 5th-6th century CE. This article has shed light on the different phases of construction of the Stupa; therefore also helping us to understand the historical processes of the making of the Stupa.

The fourth article titled 'Newly Discovered Monolithic Shrines in Goa' by Nalini Naik sheds light on recently discovered monolithic shrines from Goa and provides detailed information on architectural and sculptural elements of these shrines. Furthermore, a comparative study of these monolithic shrines with similar monolithic shrines known from Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra has also been presented. This article provides significant information about rock-cut architectural activities which existed in the region of Goa during the late historical and early medieval periods, which is otherwise almost unknown to the academic world.

The fifth article by Suhas Chand Kapur titled "The Development of the Buddhist Monastery Complex in Ancient South-Eastern Bengal (6 century CE to 13 century CE): An Observational Study.

provides an overview of Buddhist monastic complexes constructed in South Eastern Bengal during early medieval period. The article addresses few of the important questions such as the flourishing development of the Viharas or monastic complexes in this region, the role and nature of patronage behind the development of these complexes, the role of space and time in making of these monastic complexes in particular pattern and possible influence of South East Asia on the architectural models of these Buddhist monastic complexes.
