About the Book This book retells the story of Adi Sankara, one of Bharat's greatest minds. It serves as a primer for anyone interested in his life and works. While not exhaustive, it covers all extant information on Ādi Śańkara, including a bibliography for further reading. Why is this book necessary when many others exist on Ādi Śańkara? Some books are written with devotional fervour, while others are highly critical, which can be off-putting for those seeking an unbiased perspective. Although complete neutrality is impossible, this book strives for a balanced view. However, it is important to note that the author is a follower and believer of Sanatana-dharma.

Foreword Rāmāyaņa is the journey of Rama; on the same note, Sankarayanam is the journey of Adi Sankarācārya. Sankara is one of the most prolific minds that Bharat has ever produced. Äcārya was indeed a multifaceted personality of the highest order, and there is hardly any aspect of Sanatana-dharma that he did not influence. We have several biographies that have been written, and will be written, on such a popular personality. However, what I found different and refreshing in Sankarāyaņam by Subramanian (Subbu) Chidambaran, is that he has tried to create a seamless blend of storytelling and research while presenting the journey of the Acārya. Subramanian Chidambaran, an ardent devotee of Adi Sankarācārya, has penned the journey with śraddhā and bhakti, after listening to many discourses, and digesting the content of various books and monographs. Yet, this work is backed by a strong and unbiased research, at times even questioning the narratives that are popular amongst the masses, which lends it the required credibility.

Preface Like most great personalities of yore in Bhāratavarșa, we have a dearth of documentation on Acārya's life as well, especially from his contemporaries or people who lived very close to his times. Most of the works on the Acārya that we have today were written many centuries after his time. Until a century back, no one even knew where and when the Acarya was born. Prostrations to the 33rd Jagadguru of Sringeri, H.H. Sacchidananda Shivabhinava Nrisimha Bharati Mahaswami, who rediscovered the birthplace of Ācārya as Kalady in Kerala and the day of birth as Vaiśākha-śukla-pañcamī, built a temple for the Acārya there and called for Vaiśākha-śukla-pañcamī to be celebrated as Sankara Jayanti! Hence, if we were to venture into analysing the life of the Acārya historically, archaeologically, etc.
