Preface
The teaching and learning of the ancient Samhitas of Ayurveda in India has been going on continuously. Therefore, the tradition of Ayurveda is intact even after thousands of years. At the time of study-teaching, the need of the Auşadhiyanamakosa associated with the Samhitas was felt by the earlier scholars. Hence the Nighantugrantha were created to introduce the names of the medicinal substances of the Samhita. This tradition of creating Nighantus was very useful for the students studying Samhitä and other Ayurveda-curious people; because it made it easier to understand the Samhita by knowledge of the correct names and properties of the substances specified in the Samhitas. In this series of Nighantus, we first get 'Sauśruta-Nighantu' related to Suśruta Samhita. In the same way, 'Aştanga-Nighantu', a dictionary of medicinal substances of Astanga-Hrdaya by Vägbhata is also available. In the same style Siddhasara-Nighantu is also found at the end of Siddhasara-Samhita composed by Acarya Ravigupta. Synonyms of the medicinal substances discussed in the respective Samhitas in these Nighantu are compiled. Introduction of the Book Sauśruta-Nighantu is an ancient text of the Ayurvedic Nighantu tradition composed by synonymous style. This entire Nighantu is composed in Anustupa chanda (stanza) and it comprises of 325 verses. In it, the substances are divided into 32 groups like Vidarigandhādi Gana, etc. After this, the synonyms of other substances are mentioned under the Viprakirna Dravya. The Rajaguru of Nepal, Pt. Hemraj Sharma, in the prelude of Kasyapa Samhita, writes that he has a manuscript in the Suśruta Samhita, at the end of Uttara-Tantra Sausruta-Nighantu is mentioned.
