लेखक परिचय लेखक एक मध्यम श्रेणी के हिन्दु परिवार में बरेली (यू०पी०) में जन्मे तथा एक अन्य साधारण परिवार की सन्तानों की तरह एक-एक अच्छे अंग्रेजी माध्यम स्कूल के वातावरण में पढ़े तथा बड़े हुए। पिता एक स्नातकोतर महाविद्यालय में प्राध्यापक थे तथा कानपुर विश्वविद्यालय में अपनी विद्वता के लिए विख्यात थे। माता एक सुशिक्षित तथा अति धर्मपरायण गृहणी थीं। माताश्री के ही संस्कार हम चारों भाई-बहनों में एक धार्मिक निष्ठा तथा ईश्वरीयमय अवश्य था। स्नातक विज्ञान में कानपुर विश्वविद्यालय से एम०बी०ए० नेशनल इन्स्टीच्यूट ऑफ मैनेजमेंट, मुम्बई से करने के पश्चात् कुछ निजी कम्पनियों की नौकरियों को ध्यान में रखते हुए कानून की डिग्री भी कानपुर विश्वविद्यालय से प्राप्त की।

भूमिका हमारे भारतवर्ष में सद्‌गुरुओं के कार्यकलाप सदैव विचित्र तथा निराले रहे हैं। उनके जीवनकाल में भी और आज भी जब वह पृथ्वी पर साकार रूप में नहीं हैं। साई जैसे समर्थ सद्‌गुरु द्वारा ही भेजे दासगणु को मुम्बई में काका महाजनी की एक अनपढ़ नौकरानी द्वारा "ईशोपनिषद" का गूढ़ अर्थ समझाने का कार्य सम्पन्न हो सका। ठीक ऐसे ही श्री गंगाधर सरस्वती द्वारा रचित "श्री गुरु चरित्र" जैसे महान ग्रन्थ का श्री प्रदीप मेहरोत्रा जी की द्वारा लिखित इस पुस्तक का गद्य सारांश की भूमिका लिखने का कार्य मुझे सौंपा गया है। वास्तव में यह कार्य तो किसी ज्ञानी, ध्यानी अथवा संत द्वारा ही सम्पन्न होना शोभा देता है। विश्वास कीजिए मुझे अपनी लघुता का पूर्ण अहसास है परन्तु मैं क्या करूँ, अपने इस साई को जो सदा मुझ नादान बालक से अठखेलियाँ खेलता रहता है और मुझे यदा-कदा उलझनों में फंसा देता है।

प्रस्तावना जब मैं शिर्डी के साई बाबा के जीवन के विषय में विश्वसनीय सामग्री एकत्रित कर रहा था, तब मुझे कई कथाओं में यह ज्ञात हुआ कि साईं महाराज ने अनेक भक्तों को आदेश दिया था "तुम नियमित पोथी (गुरु-चरित्र) का पारायण करो, अल्लाह तुम्हारा भला करेगा।" इन कथनों ने मेरे हृदय में इस पुस्तक के विषय में उत्सुकता जगाई कि इस पुस्तक में ऐसा क्या है? उसी समय आचार्य भारद्वाज की पुस्तक "साईं बाबा द मास्टर्स" से मुझे इस ग्रंथ के कुशामाऊ के अनुभवों के विषय में ज्ञात हुआ जिसने मेरी उत्सुकता को जिज्ञासा में परिवर्तित कर दिया।
