The Siddhasara Samhita, authored by the 7th-century Buddhist scholar Ravi Gupta, explores disease management and Ayurvedic principles. Comprising 31 chapters and 1330 verses, it serves as an accessible guide for Ayurvedic study, aimed at both students and practitioners. Ravi Gupta, a magical physician and expert veterinarian from ancient India, wrote this treatise at the request of his elder brother, Deva Gupta, to simplify the complexities of Ayurveda. He is identified as a follower of the Dhanwantari cult and focused on making Ayurveda understandable for mediocres.
The treatise covers a wide array of Ayurvedic topics, including the eight branches of Ayurveda (Astanga Ayurveda) and Kayacikitsa (the science of treatment). Key subjects include the fundamentals of Ayurveda like the five elements (Pancamahabhuta), doshas, and the digestive fire (Agni). It also details 34 drug groups in the Dravya Gana Adhyaya, explores treatment methods in the Annapanavidhi Adhyaya, and includes a special chapter on fatal signs (Arista).
The treatise is rich in practical applications, describing treatments for a wide range of diseases, clinical conditions, and therapies like Pancakarma (five detoxifying therapies). It also covers specialized treatments such as Rasayana (rejuvenation) and Vajikarana (aphrodisiacs).
The Siddhasara Samhita was influential across centuries, being translated into Tibetan in the 9th century, Khotanese in the 10th century, and German in 1980. It has been analyzed to show the influence of other scholars like Vaghbata. Cakradatta, and Vrndamadhava. Its impact remains significant in the understanding of Ayurveda, contributing to its preservation and evolution.
