Anout The Author
The Editor of this volume, Om Prakash Srivastava (born in 1947), former Professor of Social & Economic History, in the Department of Ancient History Culture & Archaeology, Allahabad University, Prayagraj, is a renowned historian with specialization in the field of Social & Economic History and widely acknowledged amongst the scholars of history for his rare mastery of the huge mass of original sources. His book on Commercial Taxation is considered as a pioneering work on the subject. He has authored more than two dozen research papers in journals of national and international repute, which are widely ranked amongst the most meaningful research works in history of Ancient India and edited two books. He has participated in more than hundred Seminars, Conferences and Refresher Courses as Resource Person. The expertise and versatility of his knowledge and approach in interpreting original sources and history writing is conspicuous from the several research works successfully completed under his erudite Guidance, which ranges from shipping and mercantile activities, study of coinage to extracting history from inscriptions and socio economic aspect of art and architecture. He has been Sectional President (Ancient India) and General President of U.P. History Congress. His seminal contribution to history has been celebrated when he was selected President (Ancient India Section) of Indian History Congress for its 79th Session.

A doyen of Indian history Professor B.N.S. Yadava (1926-2012) through his extensive historical writing delves deep into original sources and brings about facts and missing links. Based on combined use of textual and archaeological, inscriptional and numismatic pieces of evidence his researches on society, economic life, samantas and landed and ruling landed intermediaries, peasant subjugation and lord vassal relation are equally admired by almost all the scholars Marxist and non-Marxist. He was former Professor and Head of the Department of Ancient History, Culture and Archaeology at the University of Allahabad. He was also a Sectional President of the Indian History Congress in 1980 and its General President in 1992-93. The present volume, a memorial to Prof. Yadava, consists of research papers of eminent scholars and budding researchers, who share in varying degrees his perception of historical developments and stood by him in his battle against obscuration of India's past. The papers relate to dimensions in Society and economy, culture, Religion and philosophy, Art, Epigraphy, Numismatics and Archaeology early India.
