The purpose of the book The Stories from the Past is to create diversion in the minds of the children and to give them some moral instructions. The stories are not just loose plots or simply moralistic in approaches but those are thought-provoking anecdotes that will definitely stimulate the minds of the children and such healthy stimulation will create positive thoughts in their minds.
The author (M.A., medalist, PhD. English), out of love for children, abridged some books, also wrote an original one under Cambridge India, and translated a book ""History of Tripura : from Monarchy to Democracy"" and wrote ""Stories from the past"" based on the Puranas etc., also abridged ""The Story of the Ramayana for children"" under Avenel Press.
Children love to read stories. They find a great deal of interest in stories. The stories entertain and impress them and serve as a source of inspiration to them. The aim of the stories of the Puranas, selected by me, is to instil in the minds of the children devotion to God through concrete examples, myths and legends. My stories from the Puranas which mainly contain tales about divine beings, lives of the saints, great kings, will make the children travel in the bygone days of sanctity and purity where justice must get the upper hand. The stories uphold some values of life, having the true essence of substantiality and the code of ethics which are to be inculcated in the minds of the children. At the same time, from the stories, the children can also get themselves acquainted with the enriched ideas of Indian culture so as to appreciate its true essence.
As the stories of Jataka are very much interesting to be read, I have selected those stories for children which will entertain as well as instruct them, specially those being the treasure house of wisdom, having valuable life-lessons. Gautam Buddha's followers believed that the birth of Buddha in both human and non-human forms was to preach the gospel of truth and wisdom to fellow human beings and animals. My stories of Jataka as a part of Indian culture and tradition deal with every aspect of life. In my stories, some changes are done in the locations, in the names of the characters and also in the themes to make the stories readable to the children and the teenagers.
The stories of Panchatantra, selected by me, also have some morals in support of those, so as to improve the minds of the children in a positive way. The stories as a collection of tales populated mainly with animal characters, acting as heroes and villains, having virtues and vices with a moralistic con-tent and a tone of instructions. The stories are also having one specific teaching i.e. how to live a better and a more meaningful life and how to behave in the world. Besides, many stories will teach the children the value of justice and important les-sons and at the same time those will also entertain them. In selecting the stories from Panchatantra I have also changed the names, places and have made some modifications in the themes to make those interesting to the children.
