This book is a collection of 23 research papers wrote by scholars of language and linguistics that appeared in the IJDL during the period from 1976 to 2014. The papers are on Bangla language and linguistics. It is arranged in chronological order of the volumes of IJDL. Classification on the basis of topic is not attempted. Phonetics, Phonology, Morphology, Syntax, Comparative Linguistics, Language Teaching and Computational Linguistics are the areas covered in the papers compiled here.
Bengali unit, the research Centre started as part of ISDL in 1977. A generous grant from the Government of West Bengal enabled to institute a chair in memory of Prof. Sunitikumar Chatterji in 1981. On the occasion of the 41st year of the formation of the Bengali unit in ISDL, we are bringing out all papers on Bangla language and Linguistics in IJDL in one volume.
Bengali Verb, Reflexive construction in Bengali, Bengali syntax (possible Dravidian influences), Bengali compound verbs, Bengali Dialects, Bengali Orthography, Onomatopoeia in Bengali, Periphrastic causation in Bangla, Diglossia in Bangla, Evolution of Bengali Grammar, Magadhi Prakrit and Bengali glide, Formation processes in Bangla and Sound symbolism in Bangla are the central topics discussed in the papers included in this volume. The views expressed in each paper are quite stimulating and it really motivates the researcher for further investigations.
Indeed this volume contains papers on important trends in the study of Bengali language and we expect this will be useful to the scholars of linguistics in general and Bengali linguistics in particular.
I acknowledge my thanks to Dr. S Abdul Samed, Senior Research Fellow, ISDL for his whole hearted support in the compilation of this book.
