Book Description
About the Book
The tribes of Northeast India and the Northeastern Frontier represent a rich tapestry of ethnic and cultural diversity. Spread across states like Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Tripura, Assam, and Sikkim, these tribes possess distinct languages, customs, and social systems. Prominent tribes include the Nagas, Kukis, Mizos, Bodos, Garos, Khasis, Apatanis, Nyishis, and Monpas, among others. Most of these tribes live in hilly, forested regions and follow unique traditions tied to nature, oral histories, and clan-based community governance. Many are classified as Scheduled Tribes under the Indian Constitution, receiving protective measures and benefits. While most tribal societies in the region are egalitarian, some follow matrilineal systems, as seen among the Khasis and Garos of Meghalaya. The Northeastern Frontier, particularly Arunachal Pradesh, is home to tribes such as the Adi, Monpa, Nocte, and Wancho, who have long maintained a distinct identity due to geographical isolation. Their livelihoods often center on agriculture, hunting, and crafts. Despite modernization, these communities strive to preserve their heritage through festivals, dances, and indigenous religious practices. However, issues like land rights, migration, and cultural assimilation continue to challenge their traditional lifestyles and autonomy.
