Book Description

Introduction

Definition and Scope of Adolescence Adolescence is a pivotal phase in human development, characterised by rapid physical, cognitive, and emotional transformations. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), adolescence spans the age range of 10 to 19 years, bridging the transition from childhood to adulthood. The onset of puberty marks this period, characterised by the development of secondary sexual characteristics and the gradual acquisition of social and personal responsibilities. The scope of adolescence extends beyond mere physical growth. It encompasses cognitive advancements, such as abstract thinking and critical reasoning, as well as emotional maturation, where individuals learn to regulate their feelings and develop a sense of self-identity. Sociologically, adolescence involves the formation of interpersonal relationships, adaptation to societal norms, and preparation for adult roles, including employment, civic participation, and family life. In different cultural contexts, adolescence can vary significantly in its definition and experience. While some societies recognise adolescence as a distinct and prolonged stage of life, others consider it a brief transition, placing a greater emphasis on early assumption of adult responsibilities. This variability highlights the importance of understanding adolescence as a multifaceted phenomenon influenced by biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors.

About the Book

Understanding Anxiety, Stress, and Development in Indian Youth explores the multifaceted challenges faced by young people in India, with a special focus on the state of Tripura. The rising prevalence of anxiety and stress among Indian adolescents has become a critical concern. With academic pressure, social expectations, and rapid technological change, today's youth must navigate a delicate balance. This book examines the root causes of these challenges and the mental health issues that arise from them. Drawing on secondary data, existing research, and case studies, it offers a comprehensive overview of the adolescent experience in India. Structured for academicians, policy makers, mental health professionals, and parents, it covers key aspects of adolescence-including physical and cognitive development, emotional and social struggles, and the impact of modern influences such as social media. It provides practical insights into how various stakeholders can support adolescents in overcoming their unique difficulties while fostering resilience and well-being. By amplifying the voices and experiences of Indian youth, particularly from the lesser-studied region of Tripura, this book aims to contribute meaningfully to ongoing efforts toward their holistic development.
