Preface

The scuffle for nation's freedom is a well-known phenomenon among the populace of India. India has been governed by multiple rulers, with the most recent being the British, who held power for an extended period. Indian freedom fighters aspired to expel the British and establish a liberated existence due to the prolonged colonization of the country by the British. The Indians' personal freedom was curtailed through many means. Numerous advocates for freedom played a crucial role in establishing an educational framework for girls and advocating for the rights of widows. In an effort to promote peaceful coexistence, the freedom fighters of India united and made a commitment to safeguard the well-being of the Indian populace. The liberation of India from the British Raj was spearheaded by prominent figures such as Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Subhas Chandra Bose, Bhagat Singh, Rani Laxmi Bai, and various more notable independence fighters.

The commencement of the liberation fight in several regions of Odisha ensued shortly after the British takeover in 1803, manifesting as armed resistance, protest, and insurrection against the foreign government. The initial uprising occurred in Khurda in 1804, under the rule of the young monarch Mukunda Deva II. In 1805, Jayee Rajaguru, a resolute minister of the Raja, was executed by hanging due to his involvement in a rebellion, so becoming the inaugural martyr of Odisha. The flawed land revenue system and unpredictable administrative decisions made by the British overlords persistently led to dissatisfaction among the population. Consequently, an armed insurrection by the Paikas occurred in 1817, led by Buxi Jagabandhu. Buxi Jagabandhu, also known as Bidyadhar Mohapatra Bhramarabara Ray, served as the military Commander of the Raja of Khurda. In 1827, following a decade-long Paik Rebellion, the residents of Tapangagarh, led by Samanta Madhaba Chandra Samantaray, initiated a rebellion against the British colonial government. The year 1835 witnessed the emergence of a rebellion in Ghumsur, spearheaded by Kamal Lochan Dora Bisoyee, a prominent Kondh leader. Bisoyee actively participated in the insurrection, aligning himself with Dhanurjay Bhanja's cause of reinstating the Bhanja family to positions of authority. The British conducted a robust military campaign to quell the Kondh insurgents, resulting in the majority of them being either fatally shot or suspended from trees. Dora Bisoyee was apprehended in 1837 and subsequently held as a captive by the state in Ooty, located near Madras. The spirit of resistance in Sambalpur was particularly intense during the tenure of Surendra Sai, the Chauhan Prince of Sambalpur. Surendra Sai formed a resistance movement against the British authorities in response to a succession dispute, around three decades before to the Great Rising of 1857. He managed to evade capture and maintained the momentum of the rebellion until 1864, despite the eventual downfall of the Great Revolt in 1858. Finally, he was apprehended in the year 1864 and subsequently held in custody at the Asirgarh fort, where he passed away on February 28, 1884. There existed several additional experienced commanders from the Sambalpur region whose notable contributions to the Indian Mutiny of 1857 should not be disregarded. The Zamindar of Ghens, situated in the Sambalpur region, Madha Singh, along with his three sons, Kunjal Singh, Hati Singh, and Bairi Singh, actively engaged in resistance against British colonial control. Numerous individuals advocating for freedom actively engaged in and made significant sacrifices during the Civil Disobedience campaign and the Quite India movement.

Furthermore, apart from these aforementioned independence fighters, there existed individuals whose sole objective was to liberate India from British domination. Nevertheless, due to a multitude of factors, our knowledge of their facial features remains limited. They have relinquished their joy and their existence in the quest for an improved tomorrow. The individuals mentioned include Birsa Munda, Veer Surendra Sai, Veer Narayana Singh, Kamala Das, Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay, Khudiram Bose, Matangini Hazra, Peer Ali Khan, BhikaijiCama, Tirot Sing, Kanaklata Barua, and other others. They deserve the same level of admiration for their endeavours as we do for renowned liberation heroes. It appears that the names of individuals who have provided assistance to the independence movement in favor of these prominent figures have been inadvertently overlooked. It is fitting to pay tribute to these individuals at this particular time.
