Book Description
Foreword
The following pages contain the edition, translation and study of a hitherto unknown chapter of a Sanskrit text that has only come down to us in frag-ments, namely, the detailed commentary (Vivrti) written by the Kashmirian Utpaladeva (c. 925-975 CE) so as to explain one of his own philosophical treatises, a major Śaiva nondualistic work entitled the Recognition of the Lord (Išvarapratyabhijña). Three chapters of this Vivrti have recently come to light; the present book focuses on the first and shortest among them, chapter 2.1, which is devoted to the examination of the power of action (kriyasakti) that the Saivas ascribe to every conscious being. The chapter's main point is to show that even though the core of consciousness, i.e., its power to become aware of itself or to grasp itself, is the subtlest form of action, sequence (krama), whether temporal or spatial, only belongs to low-er forms of action, so that Śiva-understood as an infinite, omniscient and omnipotent consciousness has a dynamic essence without being in any way spatially or temporally limited. The text therefore discusses the nature of ordinary actions performed by transmigrating individuals as well as that of Śiva's cosmic creation, while engaging in debates on the nature of space and time. The first chapter of the book discusses the place of Utpaladeva's Vivrti within the Išvarapratyabhijñā corpus and relates how its known fragments were discovered. Chapter 2 describes the manuscript sources used for the edition. Chapter 3 provides a brief overview of Utpaladeva's system and of the philosophical context in which he wrote his treatise. Chapters 4 to 10 contain a detailed analysis of the text, the translation of which is given in chapter 11; the Sanskrit original is edited in chapter 12.
