Value and distribution are really interconnected, interdependent and inseperable, for one deals with the problems of commodity-pricing in the product market and the other with the problems of factor-pricing in the factor-market. Thus both deal with the problem of valuation, which is the central theme of Economics. That is why we have decided to choose this complete theme of value and distribution as the topic of our study with regard to ancient India. Though we have many studies which deal with the socio-economic life of ancient India, they are either scattered dealing only with a minor aspect of the problem or they just describe the events from the historial point of view. Some aspects of the subject were undoubtedly treated by competent scholars in many books and monographs but a complete integrated study of all of them was not available in such a comprehensive way as kauld deal fully with this interesting theme in all its essential aspects and forms. This led us to embark upon this study. I have no hesitation it accepting that whereas in the course of this study, I have utilised the old original sources, I have also drawn heavily on the explanations and analyses given by the modern scholars. What this study claims to itself is only an attempt to present a systematic and scientific exploration and explanation of the topic on the basis of the various known and published original sources as well as the works of the modern scholars.
