Sanskrit literature is the most ancient among the literatures of the world. The poetic beauty, the arrangement of language structure, the modes of expression of thought, the variety of the subjects that have been dealt with, art of versification and some other peculiar features of Sanskrit literature have earned a unique place for it in the literary world.

The art of versification i. e. Chandas which is one among the many sciences that have been dealt with in Sanskrit literature, has developed as a science as well as an art also.

Chandas, as a science, has been in practice from the very dawn of literary production. From the Vedas to ethical muktakas, almost all sorts of compositions of Sanskrit literature, have been the inventions of this science.

To add dignified rhythm to the sacred injunctions of Vedas, to make noble the thoughts of Smritis, to magnify the verbal structure of the Puranas by adding musical touch, to enrich the charms of expressions of Itihasas by providing them with a novel and melodious order, to assist in portraying a sentiment in kavyas and to serve many such purposes, the most essential element, assistance of which has been taken throughout the literature, is Chandas.
